Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak, directed by Meghna Gulzar, is steady at the box office. After receiving rave reviews from the film critics, the film is slowly and steadily climbing up the box office numbers. It is based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
Chhapaak received a decent opening of Rs 4.77 crore on Friday and went on to make Rs 6.90 crore and 7.35 crore in the next two days. Till Sunday, the film had earned Rs 19.02 crore. Chhapaak is expected to earn Rs 5 crore on Monday. Going by the box office numbers, the film will cross Rs 30-crore mark this week.
Apart from Deepika Padukone, the film also stars Vikrant Massey who plays Amol, who is an NGO owner. Deepika’s character is called Malti in the film.
Splendid reviews from film critics couldn’t attract audiences to the theatres to watch Chhapaak, which receives a tough competition from Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.
The boycott of the film in many tier-2 cities in the country also affected the business. Several groups started boycotting the film and threatened the theatres owners against screening Chhapaak after Deepika Padukone visited JNU to show her solidarity with the students and teachers of the university who were attacked by masked goons on January 5.
Chhapaak is expected to perform better in the coming days as word of mouth publicity may work for the film.
